Texas DPS Eligibility Guide

What Disqualifies You From Getting a Security License in Texas?

Before you enroll in security training, it's important to know whether you qualify for a Texas security officer license. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Private Security Bureau conducts a background check on every applicant. Certain criminal history or personal factors can disqualify you from receiving a license. Here is everything you need to know.

Disqualifiers

Criminal History Disqualifications

  • Felony convictions — disqualify you for 20 years from the date of conviction
  • Class A misdemeanor convictions — disqualify you for 20 years from the date of conviction
  • Class B misdemeanor convictions — disqualify you for 5 years, though some exceptions may apply
  • Violence, theft, weapons, or dishonesty — can prevent you from obtaining any level of security license
  • Pending criminal charges or active warrants — will disqualify your application until resolved
Additional Factors

Other Disqualifying Factors

  • Active restraining orders that restrict firearm possession — disqualifies you from Level 3 and Level 4 armed positions
  • Documented history of substance abuse — can result in disqualification depending on circumstances
  • Mental health history involving instability or institutionalization — reviewed on a case by case basis by DPS
  • Inability to pass a fingerprint background check — through an approved vendor like IdentoGO

Armed vs Unarmed Disqualifications

Some factors that disqualify you from an armed Level 3 or Level 4 license may not disqualify you from an unarmed Level 2 license. If you have a criminal history, it is worth reviewing your specific situation against Texas Administrative Code Rule §35.4 before assuming you are ineligible. In some cases a Level 2 unarmed license is still obtainable.
